The collection of drawings below are studies for my nocturnes project, 'Night At The Fringe Of My Firelight'. Nocturnes being paintings depicting night, the series is an exploration of the boundaries of comfort and fear, knowing and not knowing what may be lurking in that fuzzy zone between what's illuminated by a man's light and the rest of Nature. My process is mostly automatic meaning that when I begin a drawing I have little preconception of what the final result will be. Not only is this liberating as a process, but I find it to be like groping in the darkness of night. In this case though I'm beginning from the all-encompassing light source of the clean white paper and gathering that light into points within the composition evoking moonlight, firelight or the 'light at the end of the tunnel'. The drawings are spontaneous works of art in their own right and will also serve as the basis for paintings within the series. Each drawing is framed in a simple matte back metal frame.
